Media: Dortmund Abandons the Signing of Mexican Álvarez from Ajax
Borussia Dortmund reportedly will not sign Mexican national football player Edson Álvarez, despite both sides having reportedly reached an agreement on the transfer. Dortmund’s management, led by Sports Director Sebastian Kehl (43), informed the 25-year-old midfielder’s agent about the decision, as reported by “Bild.” Coach Erdin Terzic is reportedly planning to continue with Emre Can (29), whose contract is set to be extended, and Salih Özcan (25). According to Sport1, the defensive midfielder from Ajax Amsterdam proved to be too expensive for Borussia Dortmund in the end. Álvarez is under contract with Ajax until 2025, and according to reports, Amsterdam demanded a transfer fee of over 35 million euros, with Sporting Director Sven Mislintat, formerly of VfB Stuttgart, involved in the negotiations. If the deal had gone through, Álvarez would have become Dortmund’s most expensive signing. Álvarez and BVB had reportedly agreed to the transfer after weeks of pursuit by the Black and Yellows.
According to reports from Sport1, “Bild,” and the Dutch newspaper “De Telegraaf,” a potential record transfer to the German runners-up is now off the table.
